Deepwater Horizon, Fukushima: A Boost For Green Energy?

After every disaster humanity adapts.  The earthquake that destroyed Kobe, Japan in 1995 meant massive amounts was invested in safe proofing Japan’s infrastructure for future quakes.  The recent death & destruction in Japan was not caused by the earthquake but rather the Tsunami that breached many of the Tsunami defenses.  Japan will probably rebuild the walls higher next time.  The threat of death triggers man to adapt.

The destruction brought about by disasters such as Deepwater Horizon and Fukushima should act as a catalyst for man to change his ways. We should see a massive shift towards safer, greener technologies.

However our politicians are too short sighted.

Obama sets a moratorium against off-shore drilling for several months in the wake of oil lapping against the southern coast of America.  Merkel sets a moratorium on the extension of the life span of the oldest plants in Germany (an Extension that she placed in law only last Autumn) as explosions rock Japan”s nuclear plants almost daily, but only sets the moratorium for 3 months. .

These are short term reactions that are politically motivated.  Obama needed to be seen to be doing something against the biggest oil spill in US history.  Merkel facing elctions needed to been seen to react in a staunchly anti-nuclear country.

Although these short term reactions have little real impact on the future of either oil or nuclear power they do have a very damaging market effect.  The shares of the affected companies tumble in the wake of such political changes.  Investors turn away and they will think twice before putting their money their again.

The disasters are just the tip of the iceberg in reality.  The real damage is hidden from the public’s view but thinking we are indestructible is a very dangerous state of mind. A state of mind that we thank god cannot possibly keep as it becomes clear that our economies are at the mercy of insecure energy resources. Unfortunately many politicians rather than confront the problems of our shaky economy hope for a miracle instead of working to make the miracle a simple step.

Renewable energy plants do not explode; they do not ooze pollution.  Renewables just create bundles of cheap, reliable, clean energy. They are the solutions to disasters such as Deepwater Horizon and Fukushima.
